Tamlyns 2008 Auction – Lot 039

The Nanney Twins – A pair of portrait miniatures, Catherine and Janet Nanney, c.1710, oil, probably on copper, 1.875 inches x 1.375 inches, contained within a black shagreen oval folding case with silver fittings. (unexamined out of case).

The twin daughters of Colonel Hugh Nanney, 17th Lord of Nannau, the last male Nanney of Nannau. A remarkable character, when he died at the age of 31, he had been High Sheriff, Vice-Admiral of North Wales, three times Knight of the Shire, and Colonel of a Regiment of Militia, which he raised himself.

Catherine (1692-1756), married William Vaughan of Corsygedol, M.P. For Merioneth 1734-1767. Janet (1692-1728), and eventual heiress of the House of Nannau, married Robert Vaughan, eldest son and heir of Howel Vaughan of Hengwrt, Co. Merioneth. Their son, Robert Howell Vaughan of Nannau and Hengwrt, was c. Baronet in 1791. Nannau Schedule of Contents 1958 (Case of Miniatures M2 and M3).
