Two Old Oak Trees Located on the Nannau Estate.
These photos were taken during Spring 2019. Both trees are located near the site of Derwen Ceubren yr Ellyll, so may well be descended from that tree.
I measured the circumference of one at 306 inches, or 25 feet 6 inches (Derwen Ceubren yr Ellyll was reported to be 27 feet 6 inches). I had to measure around the knotted base, so not a good guide to calculate an accurate age.
I would guess the trees are at least 300-400 years old, which means they would certainly have stood for at least a hundred years before their famous ancestor was destroyed by lightning in 1813.
The first tree has a great collection of Lichen on it.
The second now has a hole in the trunk.
THere is a saying about oak trees…
“200 years to grow, 200 years to live and 200 years to die”.
