A Stuart needlework casket, portraying the story of Esther, the frieze initialled ”M.C.” in silver braid and displaying charming images of animals, insects and flowers, the needlework worn and distressed save for the back two panels which are bright and fresh, 1660-1685, the interior refurbished, and with later gilt feet, 11 inches x 7.5 inches (28cm x 19cm), 8.5 inches (21.5cm) high.
Family tradition records that the initials ”M.C.” stand for Mary Cromwell, sister of Oliver Cromwell. Whilst Oliver Cromwell did not in fact have a sister of that name, he did have a daughter, whose birth in 1637 makes her a more likely recipient of the casket. Nannau Schedule of Contents 1958 (No.29). The needlework worn and distressed save for the back two panels which are bright and fresh, the interior refurbished, and with later gilt feet.
